Wood Burning Art

Wood Burning Art (also know as Pyrography).Pyrography means "writing with fire" and is the art of using a heated tip,or wire to burn designs onto wood, paper or leather.Burning can be done with a tool similar to a soldering iron with changeable tips(that's what I use), but an adjustable temperature hot wire tool is more common.I have also seen pieces made from sunlight with a magnifying lens, definitely for the more experienced artist.

Personally I started out using a broken chisel heated with a small torch, then moved to a woodburning iron kit, I purchased for around $10.This is what I have been using for the past few years and used to make the few photos of my work here.

Wood to be burned on must be free of any paint or polish and best results are from lightly sanded and smooth pieces.

This is a fun hobby for all ages and with a very small amount of time invested, one can produce remarkable works of art.

Check out Lisa Rough's work: http://www.earthfinstudios.com. Fabulous, female artist working with the medium!
